Wivenhoe Tennis Club under floodlights

Wivenhoe Tennis Club has always been a small, friendly club with a big heart, but in the late 90’s we were struggling to find a permanent home. This all changed in 2001 when we were the grateful recipient of a substantial grant from Sport England which enabled four superb floodlit all weather courts to be built at the Broad Lane Sports Ground. This resulted from tremendous work by the club committee and the Wivenhoe & District Sporting Facilities Trust with support from Colchester Borough Council. The new courts were completed in September 2001 and this heralded the beginning of a new era for the club.

For the first time, we had our very own home, and this has enabled the club to make long term plans instead of just planning for the year ahead.

The beginnings of a coaching programme were developed. We now have members who are qualified coaches and we offer coaching at any level to both youngsters and adults, either in groups or for individuals.

We started our very own winter league based at the club, and this has enabled our members to enjoy match play all year round. Many clubs in the surrounding area flocked to be a part of this new league and it continues to be very successful today. We also field several teams in the summer Colchester and District leagues. Year round match play gives those of our members who seek competitive play, the opportunity to do just that.

The courts are also available for the public to hire. This is handled very efficiently by the Spar supermarket in Wivenhoe who hold the keys and take the court fees on behalf of the club.

Part of the club’s undertaking when accepting the Sport England grant was to ‘make tennis available to everyone’ and we are extremely proud to be doing just that. The courts we have are a fantastic facility available to everyone in Wivenhoe and the surrounding district. The club has in place a Child Protection Policy and a Health and Safety Policy
